Probably the most famous place to honeymoon in Greece is the world-famous Santorini. And for good reason.

On the island you’ll find adorable white stone houses as far as the eye can see. Red, white and black sand beaches to explore. 

But it’s the undoubtedly the immense views which draw in the crowds.

Whether you arrive on a direct flight, ferry or cruise it will be no more than a few minutes before you experience one of the jaw-dropping views of the turquoise Mediterranean below which can be seen from most hotels on this elevated island.

Once there your toughest job each day will be deciding where to watch the show-stopping sunset.

We recommend “sunset boulevard” in Oia, Santo Winery near Fira, and Akrotiri to the south.

Of all the places to stretch your budget for accommodation with a view – it’s definitely in Santorini.

It is impossible to not to fall in love with the view (and each other) each time you admire the view from your bedroom.

For good measure you can book a room with a private hot tub, plunge pool or hammock from which to pass the late afternoon.

Oia

The most famous sunset is in Oia, as are the fanciest restaurants, hotels and designer shops.

All day and late into the evening you can stroll the hilltop boulevard with a throng of other tourists.

There’s a wonderful enthusiastic vibe in Oia.

You must spend at least one afternoon watching the sunset here – preferably somewhere that you can enjoy the iconic windmills too.

Oia is one of the most romantic places to visit in Europe and a must on any bucket list.

Every hotelier, shopkeeper and restauranteur here knows they have a captive audience so you’ll find that prices here are 3-4 times more expensive than other greek islands.

Thankfully prices in Greece are more affordable to begin with, but do budget $10 for a cheap beer, $15 for a craft beer, $20 for a basic cocktail and >$70 for a bottle of wine at most places with any type of view.

Mykonos – party like a celebrity

We’ll be the first to admit that Mykonos – world-renowned party destination – is a surprise entry at #2 in our list.

By all means it lives up to its reputation with dance-til-sunrise bars and beach clubs.

But there’s plenty for couples of all ages too.

That high energy atmosphere transcends into the narrow cobbled streets of old-town Chora and to the harbour-side restaurants of Little Venice.

From the late afternoon til late in the evening the laneways are abuzz with visitors shopping, eating and drinking after a long day relaxing at one of the beaches.

Couples visiting Mykonos made up a surprisingly large percentage of visitors in town and they are well catered for.

The restaurants feature plenty of intimate tables for two and the bars were packed with couples dancing-like-no-one-is-watching late into the night.

Top places to watch the sunset include the postcard-perfect Mykonos windmills, the nearby restaurants come bars come nightclubs of Little Venice, and the instagram-famous spots high on the hills like 360 Bar (where tables start at 70 minimum spend a person).

If you rent a vehicle – and we think you should to visit the lovely beaches – then consider watching a sunset from there.

The sunsets on the southern/northern/western beaches feature uninterrupted views so you can watch the sunset on the ocean on the horizon.

Our favourite beach sunsets were from Kaparia, Platis Gialos, Kalafati & Elia beaches. In other words – they’re all pretty damn good!

Where to stay

We stayed in the heart of the action in Chora (aka Mykonos Old Town) and we loved it.

Be sure to check the hotel reviews carefully to ensure your room won’t be affected by noise as some hotels are near clubs which run into the early hours of the morning.

In the hills surrounding the old town you’ll find the fancier hotels with in-room amenities like plunge pools and hot tubs.

They are also within walking distance of the action so you have the best of both words.

If you prefer to spend your day at the beach then the best places for you are at one of the resorts overlooking the popular beaches of Paradiso, Psarou and Platis Gialos which are 15 minutes drive south of Mykonos.

Here you’ll also find the biggest beach clubs, which is convenient if you want to party the night away.

Super Club Paradiso is the place to be for the biggest Sunday night beach party.

At the southwest beaches of Ornos and Agio Ioannis you’ll find laid back beach hotels for a more quiet stay (but still a short drive away from the old town for nights out).

Santa Marina, a Luxury Collection Resort & Villas – This 5-star resort is situated right on the beach in Mykonos, offering stunning views of the Aegean Sea. If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, this is the place for you! With its infinity pool, spa, and private beach, Santa Marina is the perfect place to relax and forget all your worries.

Myconian Utopia Resort – This luxury resort is located on a hilltop overlooking Elia beach, offering breathtaking views of the sea and Mykonos town. Enjoying the Charm of Naxos

Naxos and its twinning island of Paros are both a level down from Santorini and Mykonos in terms of tourists and prices. Which makes it a popular place to visit for a relaxing holiday.

The beaches in Naxos are mostly sandy, and the water is more calm and shallow than the other islands.

We also loved the white marble city of Chalkio which is worth making the trip to. Do be sure to try to traditional honey balls at Fabrica cafe if you visit (leave a comment if you tried them).

One of the more romantic beaches we visited was Microlimano beach which funnily enough is positioned next to the creatively named “Hotel Ruins Alyko” which is the empty shell of a never completed mega hotel which if constructed probably would have stopped most people from enjoying the beautiful views.

This beach was pebbly and if you want to take a longer walk you can follow it around up the west coast along the neighbouring Hawaii Beach.

Don’t get carried away and walk to the neighbouring naturist beach – we already found way too much bare white old German butt (and more) for our liking at normal beaches – unless that’s what you’re into.

In Naxos town (main port) we spent most afternoons and evenings exploring the labyrinth of shops which snake their way up along the old narrow laneways towards the old fort/church. There were countless good restaurants in these laneways, but we loved the filo-wrapped baked feta with honey and sesame seeds, and the slow-cooked lamb at Lucullus Tavern.

For seafood the best spots are unsurprisingly at the restaurants along the esplanade where you can usually snag a spot with port views. Leave room for ice-cream desert at Waffle House (no, not the US chain).

For a very special sunset make your way over to the Temple of Apollo – an Ancient Greek arch next to the port.

We preferred to enjoy the same view from the comfort of our hotel room where we sipped wine on our terrace as we watched the pilgrims quick footing it down the marina while trying (and failing) to avoid Seaspray from the crashing waves.

Iliada Suites – In Naxos we highly recommend you stay at this hotel (which we loved) or one of the neighbouring properties with a clifftop view of Naxos port and the Temple of Apollo.

Avgoustos Suites Naxos – luxurious accommodation located near the town of Moutsouna. The suites offer stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the Naxos countryside, as well as easy access to nearby beaches and attractions.

Enjoy the Beauty of Milos with your Beauty

More than one local Greek told me Milos was known as the best Greek island for lovers.

Well, it certainly has the most stunning and diverse beaches.

The most famous ones include the lunar-esque Sarakiniko Beach which is what I’d imagine swimming on the surface of the moon would be like if it had water.

Fyriplaka beach is one of the few on Milos which features sun lounges and bar service. Set in the footsteps of stunning red cliffs, it’s a majestic place to laze away the day.

If you want a bit more thrill-seeking you can walk across to the neighbouring Tsigrado Beach (10 minutes walk away) where you must navigate down a ladder through a hole in the cliffs to reach the strip of beach below.

Milos is far-less touristic than it’s bigger brother and sister islands which is lovely because you won’t regularly find the small island overrun with day-tripping cruise ship passengers.

Most of the best places to visit can be reached within 20 minutes by car so you can easily check out multiple beaches in a day.

Another must-do beach is Kleftiko to the west in a remote part of the island only accessible by road on an ATV or 4WD / Jeep (you’ll also need to hike 40 minutes).

An easier option is to take a boat tour there which features stops at various other beaches only easily accessible by water.

We chose this sailing boat which was fun and we enjoyed the company of four other couples onboard as we enjoyed swimming in some of the most stunning water we’ve ever witnessed.

That said, stock up on sea-sickness tablets beforehand because desperately missed them which dampened our day.

The three most popular places to stay in Milos are Adamantas (the port), the capital of Plaka which is located up the hill, and the old fishing village of Pollonia which is now more popular with tourists.

At all these places you’ll find plenty of high quality restaurants.

However, compared to the others Pollonia is the smallest and has very few shops to enjoy – so we’d recommend staying here moreso if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing stay.

We found Adamantas to be the liveliest town of an evening – if you want to go out to drink or dance there are a few bars which you can enjoy (it’s not a dead quiet village like we had expected).

White Pebble Suites: This luxury boutique hotel offer a unique experience of the Greek Islands with panoramic views of the sea and traditional Greek decor. Located in Pollonia, 250 m from Pollonia Beach, the rooms include a balcony with a sea view.

White Coast Pool Suites: This hotel offers a unique combination of luxury amenities and beachfront views. Enjoy the rooftop pool and bar, while taking in the incredible views of the Aegean Sea.

Paros – Best Island for Adventure

The best island for day tripping.

For us, renting a car in each of the Greek Islands is a must because sun-baking and drinking all day isn’t our cup of tea.

Most of the islands had other towns which were worthwhile visiting.

However, the towns in Paros were a level above the rest.

A must-visit town is Nassaou, a quaint Harbourside town to the north of the island featuring white-washed buildings containing high quality shops (whether it’s designer clothes or pretty jewellery to spoil your loved one with).

There is water-side dining to rival Mykonos’ little Venice.

Two beaches in Paros caught our attention: Kolympethres Beach where you can relax on the impressive rock formations and if you’re lucky find your own private bit of paradise (though difficult in high season). The other is Paralia Santa Anna beach which is famous for diving tours.

Even if diving isn’t your thing, there is excellent snorkelling directly off the beach.

To the east and south of the island the old fishing villages of Piso Livadi and Ampelas are worth visiting to enjoy an afternoon or evening drink or meal in one of the many restaurants on the water.

Be sure to make a stop in the mountaintop town of Lefkes which is a quant place to spend a few hours strolling the cobblestoned streets whilst cuddling with some of the friendliest cats in the Greek islands.

There are plenty of bars and restaurants to stop at for a gelato or coffee while you enjoy the leisurely country atmosphere and crisp mountain air.

We stayed in the main port town of Parikia which we were very happy with.

We loved exploring the many laneways which criss-cross the area behind the port.

There’s a wonderful atmosphere from the people dining, drinking and shopping.

However, we also loved visiting Nassaou and we found some cool accommodation there we would not hesitate to stay at in the future.

Nassaou is a little more upmarket – you’ll notice people get dressed up here like they do in Mykonos and Santorini.

At the port you certainly won’t be out of place if you head into dinner dressed up – but lot’s of places there are very chill.
