The bus from Christchurch to Hokitika takes approximately 4 hours.
If you would like to take the bus, there is one daily from the Christchurch Bus Interchange.
On the journey, there is one change required at Kumara Junction.
The cost of the bus is quite expensive at 40 USD pp.
Christchurch to Hokitika by train
Alternatively, there is a train that covers the journey from Christchurch to Hokitika.
We would not recommend the train as it takes 6 hours (as opposed to 4), there is still 1 change required at Greymouth.
The cost of the train is even more expensive than the bus at $130 pp a ticket.
Christchurch to Hokitika by car
The option we would recommend for the journey is doing the route by car.
We did a road trip of New Zealand and we found this to be the best way to see all New Zealand has to offer.
The journey by car only takes around 2 hours and costs around $30 USD on fuel plus car hire.
The good news is a car fits up to 5 people so it is quite economical if you are traveling in a group.
What to see in Hokitika
Hokitika is a super cute beachside town in New Zealand.
We would highly recommend adding a stop here on your New Zealand itinerary.
It is a also a great place to make a pitstop before Franz Josef Glacier.
We would recommend getting some fish and chips at Porky’s Takeways in Hokitika. This fish and chip shop is super popular with the locals.
If you are interested to try New Zealand shark this is also a great place to do it!
