Frithsden Vineyard: Is it worth a visit?

Frithsden Vineyard is a popular weekend activity for locals in Hemel Hempstead and there is no doubt why – this super cute winery is something out of a Rom-Com Movie – it is just sooo cute!

If you’re looking for a romantic outing from London then pop this on your list. Read our guide to a couples day out from London.

Frithsden Vineyard – Is it worth a visit?

Frithsden Vineyard is an afternoon delight in Hemel Hempstead and a perfect activity if you are passing through the area on a road trip.

About the Vineyard

The winery was established by a wine enthusiast couple who stumbled upon a run down vineyard no longer producing wine.

Wanting to reestablish the place, they learnt everything there is to know about wine and plated 6000 vines on the site.

What makes the winery so special is that the grapes are hand picked and bottled on site.

What to do at Frithsden vineyard?

You can have a lovely tasting experience at the vineyard, try some homemade food at the cafe or take a walk in the vineyard.

The Cafe

The cafe is open open every Saturday & Sunday 11am – 5pm.

The inside of the cafe is super popular as it boasts a very quaint, English country interior.

You can eat sandwiches, platters, and cream teas at the cafe. The cafe prides itself on providing a delicious afternoon tea with home baked cakes.

The nice thing about the afternoon tea is that it is served on really beautiful floral vintage china.

The cafe was so popular when we arrived that you could barely find a seat!

Wine Tasting

Like any good winery, Frithsden offers wine tasting on premises.

You can taste 6 wines with a cheese platter for £24pp.

It is necessary to book for a wine tasting. The day we arrived the tasting sessions were booked out and only wine by the bottle was available for sale.

The alternative to tasting is a guided tour of the vineyard with the wine maker himself.

If you want to book you can call on 01442 878723 or email [email protected].

Take a walk in the vineyard

If you are merely looking for a peaceful stroll in the English countryside, you can take a self guided walk of the vineyard for only £2pp.

There is a sign where you can start your tour directing you to pay inside.

Don’t try to access the vineyard without paying. We have read that the winemaker is particularly cautious of stingy tourists and will chase you out of his garden like the crazy farmer with a rack in Peter Rabbit.

Fair enough, man’s gotta make a buck!

How to get to the vineyard?

Frithsden Vineyard is 1 hour’s drive from central London (traffic permitting).

From Hemel Hempstead it is a scenic 15 minute drive.

The roads are quite narrow in this area so be careful not to speed and when you park make sure you push your rear view mirror in as otherwise it can be knocked off by oncoming traffic.

What else is there to do in the nearby area?

The vineyard is an alcoholics delight! Just down the road from the vineyard is one of the cutest pubs we have ever had the pleasure to visit.

The pub is called the Alford Arms and serves amazing beer as well as food.

There is a great alfresco outside area which is perfect to enjoy a cold beer on a sunny day.

You’ll also find a number of great lavender farms nearby.
