Spooky Halloween Hashtags for Instagram (2023)
Halloween is seriously one of the best times of year, isn’t it?
Well, fall in general is pretty darn cool. I just wish I was a kid again so I could get out and go trick or treating! Yummmm…
If you are adulting like us and want to post some spooky halloween images to your instagram, here are the best hashtags for killer instagram reach this spooky season.
Why use Halloween Hashtags on Instagram?
Hash tags are important to use on Instagram because it means more eyes on your profile. More eyes on your profile mean more engagement and followers. More engagement and followers equals Instagram Superstar!
You are allowed to use up to 30 Hash Tags on Instagram based on Instagram’s policies.
There are various different ideas on strategies regarding how many hash tags to use.
Some people believe why only enter the lottery 10 times when you have 30 chances? Others believe over hash tagging can violate Instagram’s spam policy and lead you to become shadow banned.
And we are here to tell you shadow banning is not a myth. We have been shadow banned before and it is NOT fun having your post seen by nobody on Instagram.
If you are new to the term shadow ban basically it means not having your posts seen in hash tags.
Various things can get you shadow banned including using the same hash tag over and over.
For this reason, make sure you mix up your hash tags. Do not use the same hash tags every time or you will face the notorious and dreaded shadow ban!
Another tip to avoid getting shadow banned is to place your hash tag in the post description NOT your first comment. It may be nice to hide your hash tags in your comments but this is a method that will result in you being shadow banned.
NOTE: We have been experimenting with placing our hashtags in the first comment since 2019 and no shadow ban yet. But, if you rather be safe than sorry we wouldn’t advise it.
To err on the side of caution (but still have lots of entries in the lottery) we use around 20 hash tags on our Instagram posts.
What Halloween Hashtags to use for Instagram?
There is no one size fits all or a cooker cutter answer.
There is a formula to this answer. We have developed two questions to help you determine which hash tags are best for you!
1. How Big are You?
In determining what hash tags to use, we firstly need to know how many followers you have. This will determine the size of hash tag we can go after:
- 0 – 20,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 10,000 tags
- 20,000 – 40,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 50,000 tags
- 50,000 – 100,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 100,000 tags
- 100,000 – 300,000 – Aim for hash tags less than 300,000 tags
- 300,000 + – Hit them big tags up!
2. What is your engagement rate?
If you have 300,000 followers and an engagement rate of 0.01%, you are not going to appear in top of 300,000+ hash tag.
Why?
Whether you will appear at the top of a hash tag depends on your rate of engagement. Firstly, if your followers engage in your post and secondly, how fast your followers like and engage with your post.
If your engagement is a little sub-par aim for hash tags in one to two categories down from your follower count.
Remember the aim of the game is to appear at top of hash tags and gain more followers and likes!
Should I do Halloween hashtags alone?
In our opinion, you should mix up your halloween hashtags with other hashtags relevant to your picture. We have included some that might be relevant to you below.
The key here is relevance. You should not hash tag #cutecats if there is no cat in your photo! Instagram has intelligence to work this out!
Use around 5-10 halloween hash tags, 5-10 location hash tags and 5-10 action hash tags based on what you are doing.

How to make your photos POP this Halloween?
In our opinion the best way to make your Halloween pictures stand out is using Instagram filters or presets.
We have developed our own Instagram presets. If you want to try them out for Halloween, you can download some free presets.
What are Instagram Lightroom Presets?
Lightroom is an editing program that allows you to edit your photos to make them POP on Instagram.
Over the past 3 years we have worked on developing our Instagram game. In the process we have managed to grow from 0 to over 100,000 followers. We attribute a large percentage of our increase in followers to our photo editing.

Can you see the evolution of our photos?
Well, we did it the hard way.
When we started on Instagram back in 2016 we didn’t know about Instagram presets.
By the end of 2017, we discovered Lightroom and things changed for us. Suddenly our photos started getting a lot better and more professional and as a result we were rewarded with more sponsored deals and travel.
We use the desktop version of Lightroom to edit our photos. You can get a free Adobe Lightroom trial here.
You are able to use mobile Lightroom however, it does not have the same capabilities as the desktop version so we would highly recommend buying the paid desktop version if you can afford it.

Why use Instagram Lightroom Presets?
If you would like to make it as an influencer on Instagram, you really need to invest in Instagram Lightroom presets.
As we have mentioned, before we started using presets it was more difficult for us to get sponsored travel and sponsored posts on Instagram.
Partly this was due to the fact that we had less followers but partly it was because our photographs were not up the standard necessary to warrant sponsorships.
If you are shooting for a coffee shop in a dark room, without using Lightroom, it is impossible to make the photo pop.
From a brands perspective, they not only want to expose their product to your audience but they want to do so in the best possible light. They want their product to SHINE in the photo and make your followers want to have it.
They may also want to reuse your photo for their own marketing purposes. A dark, gloomy photo of their coffee shop isn’t going to entice customers to want to visit and is therefore no use to them.
Okay so now we have established that you need to use Lightroom presets to succeed as an influencer, lets get to the good free stuff – free presets.
